A little About Ourselves |
|
Since the late 1970’s Peruvian-American Medical Society, also known as PAMS, members have conducted more than 100 medical and educational missions to areas throughout Peru. Physicians, nurses, dentists and paramedical volunteers travel to Peru at their own expense, motivated by a passion to help those in desperate need of medical care. By working collaboratively with local providers and medical schools, free care has been given to thousands of patients. Several million dollars in equipment, supplies and medications have been donated to support the missions and to modernize pediatric, neonatal, gastrointestinal, cardiac and surgical units of local healthcare facilities. Members have developed dialysis units in Cuzco and Lima, burn units in Arequipa and Iquitos, and a cardiovascular unit at Hospital Dos de Mayo for the care of the poor and surgical training.
One of the many places PAMS has helped and will continue to do so is the city of Iquitos where Dr. Iracema Arévalo, a PAMS member living in Ohio, has undertaken the development of a new medical mission for Iquitos. Dr. Arévalo was born in Iquitos, Peru where she attended elementary, middle, and high school and then moved to Lima where she attended Medical School at Cayetano Heredia University. She pursued her Post Graduate studies at McGill University, Montreal, Canada where she obtained a Masters Degree in Parasitology and then continued her career in Pediatrics at Lincoln Medical Center, which is affiliated with Cornell University.
Dr. Arévalo pursued subspecialty training in Pediatric Infectious Disease and Immunology at New York University. She currently works as a Pediatric Infectious Disease Physician at ProMedica Memorial Hospital in Fremont, Ohio. The mission Dr. Arévalo will be leading will be carried out at the Morona Cocha clinic that serves some of the poorest populations in Iquitos. The Jorge Arevalo Medical Mission was born from Dr. Arévalo's desire to help people learn to help themselves. This mission's goal is to improve access to health care, promote wellness, and educate the population that live along the rivers in the Peruvian Amazon jungle. In addition, the mission hopes to aid in the long-term medical development within the region.
